SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND ELIGIBILITY

•The subject of the photograph must align with the theme ‘Built Heritage of Kolkata
•Participants are allowed to submit a maximum of two photographs in high resolution (300 dpi) in JPG format
•Each photograph’s file size should not exceed 10 MB
•Ensure that all details related to the photograph are accurately filled out; incomplete submissions will be disqualified
•Photographs must not contain watermarks
•Do not add any text or details directly onto the photograph through editing
•Selected photographs will be printed and displayed on sunboard
•Submission fee for two photographs is INR 500.00 (Non-refundable) (Click on the link below to apply)
•Selected participants will be required to pay INR 300 towards the printing and display of their photographers
•The jury’s decision on the selection of photographs is final 
•Photographers from India and other countries are eligible to participate in the Open Call
•Selected participants are not required to print and frame their photographs initially.  After confirmation of selection, a nominal fee will be required for printing and display.
•There is no age limit for submissions
•The top 5 participants will receive a Certificate of Merit, while other participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

About the Group

Sanjay Mandal Group: Sanjay Mandal and his group redefine music and art by creating symphonies from unexpected sources—empty paint tins, scrap metals, and wood. Starting in 2005, Sanjay's mission began as a quest to empower underprivileged children in Tangra's slums, offering education, healthcare, and a path to a different life. Now, after 18 years, he continues to guide the third generation towards a brighter future. 

Sanjay, skilled in leather-based instruments and sree khol, earned recognition and a Ministry of Culture scholarship. Leading a group of 16-17 children, they've achieved acclaim on "India's Got Talent" and in films like "Aami Joy Chatterjee," "Extraction," and "Tangra Blues." Their unique signature lies in playing music with waste materials, accompanied.
Workshop Overview:  

By the end of this workshop, participants can expect to:

Keerat excels in comprehensive condition assessments, meticulous documentation, and the implementation of ethical restoration techniques. She actively contributes to capacity-building initiatives through field surveys, workshops, and innovative treatment methodologies. Her perspective on heritage within homes & unwavering interest in the revival of heirlooms makes her a suitable trainer for the workshop.

About Debdeep Mukherjee: 
Debdeep Mukherjee is an Indian lyricist, music director, and singer who primarily works in the Bengali film industry. He shot to fame with his singles, such as 'Hoyeni Alap' in 2018, and made his mark as a music director in the Bengali film ‘Rawkto Rawhoshyo’ (2020). With an impressive discography that includes titles like ‘Manojder Odbhut Bari,’ ‘Dhanbaad Blues,’ and ‘Rokto Rohoshyo,’ Debdeep's contributions to the world of music are undeniable.  

Debdeep has also graced international stages with his performances in Bangladesh, Qatar, and the USA, further solidifying his reputation as a global artist.

By the end of the workshop, you can expect to have learned the following:  

  • Knowledge about plants suitable for eco-printing  
  • Learning the intricate techniques of eco-printing  
  • DIY projects to prepare at home  
  • Various innovative ideas for unique gifting  

What will you cover?  

  • Introduction to basic eco-printing and the equipment 
  • Participants will be provided their own materials so they can proceed to prepare their own bundles. (bundles: the rolled and tied fabrics)  
  • All the prepared bundles will be subjected to heat via steam (either in induction or in steamer). It will require at least an hour to see some significant results.  
  • Once the bundles are safely put to steam, various applications and DIY projects will be discussed including how to eco-print your own clothing items.  
  • Unbundling and revealing the outcome of the projects.  
  • Participants will be crafting a stole, which they can take back home.  

 

Trainer profile  

Adrita Biswas; an academician, clusterpreneur, textile artist, and avid handloom enthusiast; is currently pursuing a PhD in eco-printing. An NIFT alumni, she co-founded the ‘House of Bengal’, a sustainable venture based on eco printing. Her sole mission is to adopt and introduce eco-friendly lifestyle choices to conscious humans.

Trainer Profile
Ridhima Mundhra studied in London for her BA (Hons) in Human Resources and International Tourism and later obtained an MBA from Middlesex University. While she worked in an administrative position at a university, she pursued her passion for art by working as a Henna artist, as well as learning different art techniques from workshops and attending abstract expression art courses at Central Saint Martins (London). Her expertise is in acrylic, organic paints, watercolor, and pen and ink mediums.  

Ridhima started Artroom Kolkata in October 2017 with just one thought - make art accessible to all.

The Arko Mukhaerjee Collective: 

The Arko Mukhaerjee Collective is a unique effort to unite musicians under a common platform of open free music sharing, exploring influences from around the world. This five-member project draws inspiration from Rural Bengal, Pan India, West Africa, Sukous, Nepali folk, Gypsy music, Middle East, Old-time swing, American folk music, Qawwali, Reggae, Jazz, Afro Cuban music, Celtic standards, and Retro Bollywood. The result is a vibrant fusion. 

Every concert by The Arko Mukhaerjee Collective is a one-of-a-kind sonic and emotional journey, ranging from Retro Bollywood to Old-time swing. This artistic endeavor appeals to a broad audience, bridging generational gaps and offering something for everyone. The Collective binds Rural Bengal together with West Africa, creating a unique melange of music that will transport you to a dancy trancy vibe. 


About Arko Mukhaerjee: 
Arko Mukhaerjee, a trained North Indian classical singer and urban folk artist from Calcutta, India, is a unique vocalist in the independent folk music scene. With influences from European, African, Middle-Eastern, American, and Indian folk songs, blues, soul, and various tribal music forms, Arko's collaborations and projects blend tradition and modernity. He sings in more than 15 languages and has played in eminent music festivals across the globe. 

From playing with French folk and gypsy jazz musicians to collaborating with renowned Gypsy Jazz guitar Maestro Daniel Givone, Arko's musical journey has been diverse and rich. He has incorporated the bluegrass soundscape into his Indo-Irish musical duo called Crossover and founded the popular independent folk outfit, Fiddler’s Green.

With over 45 years of practice and learning from masters such as Guru Kanhiya Lal Yati and Shri Vaishnav Das Ji, Kalyan Ji is a master trainer of Pichwai Painting Art. His exceptional skills have been recognized with awards such as the National Award (2011), All India Silver Medal Award by Prafulla Dahanukar Foundation (2017), and Paramparagat Award by the Haryana Government (2018).

‘Lavani Ke Rang’ Highlights:

Get to Know the Artists: 

About the Group

B Spot Productions creates performances that enable communities to share their stories, facilitate the audience to explore sensory pleasures and initiate conversations on taboo topics. They also conduct Lavani workshops, writing workshops, food trails and culture trails. The group is founded by Mumbai-based writer Bhushan Korgaonkar with a team of multi-disciplinary collaborators including Geetanjali Kulkarni, Kunal Vijayakar, Anita Date, Wasimbarry Maner and others who create these stories of love and desire, crime and thrill, humour and hope. 

They have performed at Prithvi Theatre Festival, META, NCPA Festivals, Lodhi Festival, Bharangam, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and at other private and public venues in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, Berlin, St. Petersburg and London. 

Artists On-stage

Shakuntalabai Nagarkar (Dancer and Singer) Fondly known as Shakubai, Shakuntalabai is the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2008. With a career spanning over 50 years, she has been a trailblazer in the world of Lavani. She has not only mastered the art of Lavani but has also mentored and trained many young artists in footwork, singing, and adakari. Shakuntalabai has also ventured into acting in Marathi films, plays, orchestras, and choreographed Lavani songs for Marathi and Tamil films. She hails from the Bhatu Kolhati Samaj, a traditional nomadic matriarchal community of entertainers. 

Pushpa Satarkar (Singer and Dancer) Pushpa, a celebrated artist, is the winner of the Patthe Bapurao Pawalabai Award in 2021. She has managed her own troupe in places like Pune, Sanaswadi, and Kolhapur, where her fans eagerly await her unique combination of high-pitched vocals, melodious singing, and the rhythmic sounds of her ghungroos. Pushpa belongs to the Dombari Kolhati Samaj, a traditional community of dancers. 

Gauri Jadhav (Dancer) Gauri is a Lavani artist with a career spanning over 18 years. In addition to her dance career, Gauri has also ventured into acting in Marathi plays, TV serials, and TV comedy shows. 

Latabai Waikar (Singer) Latabai, a lead singer at Aryabhushan Theatre in Pune, has been actively singing for the past 35 years. Her husky voice has garnered her a dedicated fan base, and she has received numerous awards in prestigious Lavani competitions within the state. Latabai is part of the Dombari Kolhati Samaj, a traditional dancing community. 

Sunil Dhonukshe (Dancer) Sunil is a cross-dressing Lavani dancer and choreographer with seven years of experience in the industry. He also excels in costume design and makeup artistry for Lavani and other dance forms. 

Chandrakant Lakhe Jejurikar (Music Accompanist - Paaypeti-Organ) Chandrakant and the Sathidars, with only Dholki, Tablaa, and Paaypeti (Organ), create the atmosphere of an entire orchestra. Chandrakant has won numerous awards and accolades during his 28-year career. 

Vinayak Jawale Waikar (Music Accompanist - Tabla) Vinayak is an accomplished tabla and dholki player at Aryabhushan theatre in Pune. He is also a skilled singer and is in high demand for his performances at private events. Vinayak has received several awards and accolades during his 24-year career. He is part of the Dombari Kolhati Samaj, a traditional dancing community. 

Sumit Kudalkar (Music Accompanist - Dholki) Sumit Kudalkar is a master of both the Dholki and Tabla. Over the course of his 18-year career, Sumit has earned numerous awards and accolades for his exceptional talent. He proudly represents the Dombari Kolhati Samaj, a traditional dancing community. 

Geetanjali Kulkarni (Creative Producer) Trained at the National School of Drama, Geetanjali Kulkarni is an accomplished actor renowned for her work on the Hindi and Marathi stage, in films, and web series. Her career, which began in 1996, boasts significant roles in important films such as 'Court,' 'Anandi Gopal,' 'Karkhanasinachi Waari,' 'Photograph,' and web series like 'Gullak,' 'Taj Mahal 1989,' 'Arya,' and 'Unpaused.' Geetanjali's talents extend worldwide, with her plays like "Piya Beharupiya," "Gajab Kahani," "Sex, Morality & Censorship," and "Mu.Po. Bombilwadi" having travelled across the globe. She is a core faculty member at Drama School Mumbai. 

Artists Off-stage

1. Bhushan Korgaonkar, Writer & Director 
Bhushan has been engaging with Lavani artists since 2002 which led him to write his award-winning book ‘Sangeet Bari’ (Rajhans Prakashan) in 2014. Based on it he went on to create the much-acclaimed show ‘Sangeet Bari’. He has designed and curated shows such as ‘Antarnaad’, ‘Baithak’, ‘Mi Kaat Takali’, ‘Lavani Ke Rang’, ‘Love & Lavani’, ‘Straight from the Heart’ and ‘Apsara Aali’. He has written Lavani and other songs for music videos produced by ‘Agents of Ishq’.  

2. Kunal Vijayakar, Creative Producer, Photographer and Production Support 
To kindle his multi-disciplinary interests, Kunal heads two art studios in Mumbai where he facilitates art, theatre and literature related events. He has widely photo-documented the traditional Lavani artists and collaborated with several production houses to document theatre related events. He is also an actor, a puppeteer, a graphic designer and a language trainer. 

3. Vikrant Thakar, Lights 
Vikrant has a rich experience of working as a Lights Designer and Operator for past 14 years. He primarily works in Mumbai and Pune based productions in addition to classical dance shows and other live events. He was awarded with the prestigious ‘METa’ award in March 2023 for his design in ‘Hunkaro’.  

4. Ruchir Chavan, Sound 
Ruchir has a rich experience of working on sound design and operation for over 14 years. He has worked in theatre, orchestras, music shows and live events.  Bhadrakali Production’s play ‘Sangeet Devbabhli’ for which he has worked as a sound designer, has won numerous awards in various categories. 

5. Ankit Saraf, Production Manager 
Ankit is a theatre practitioner working in Mumbai's theatre circuit since 2018. He is working as an actor and a production manager for Hindi, English & Marathi plays. His play 'Phislan' was showcased at Prithvi Festival. Ankit has also acted in a few TV, digital and print commercials.

About the Artists

Samantak Sinha is a versatile singer-songwriter, vocalist of the Kolkata-based band "Samantak & Mates," and a music producer for films, TV series, and more. His journey into musical prominence began as the playback voice behind the protagonist Gora in "Gaaner Opaare," a celebrated television program directed by Rituparno Ghosh. Samantak's extensive music career spans live performances in India, the UK, Europe, and South East Asia, showcasing his versatility as a vocalist and musician. His educational background, including Sound Engineering and Music Production in London, further solidifies his status as a multifaceted artist. Samantak's discography includes a variety of film soundtracks and collaborations with renowned artists.

Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in spoken words and theatre. His voice is his artistic medium for expressing powerful narratives on gender, sexuality, social issues, and humanity. Sujoy has acted in notable Bengali films and web series and has ventured into directing and producing his own work. He is the artistic director of Phreedom4 Ever Monologues, India's only solo arts festival. Sujoy is also the founder of SPCkraft, Kolkata's only interdisciplinary arts collective, and has introduced a line of unisexual accessories and body-positive couture.

Setting Records and Winning Hearts: Their dedication to their craft is demonstrated by a remarkable "World Record" for singing 12 hours non-stop qawwali in Delhi, an achievement acknowledged by the "Limca Book of Records." They have earned the highest grade of artistry recognized by the All India Radio (Akashwani) and are empaneled as 'Outstanding' artists by the ICCR and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. 

Captivating the World: The Qutbi Brothers have mesmerized audiences in India and across the globe, including countries like France, Maldives, Kuwait, South Africa, Tanzania, UAE, Singapore, and the UK. Their performances at prestigious national and international festivals, such as the Commonwealth Games India, Arth – A Culture Festival, and Jashn-e-Qawwali Festival, have even earned them two awards at META 2023. They are empaneled as 'Outstanding' artists by both the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

By the end of the two-day workshop, you can expect to have learned the following:  

  • Presentation on terracotta sculpture - Knowledge sharing and understanding the history of terracotta sculptures.  
  • Hands-on learning on the process of creating hollow forms using terracotta clay.  
  • Using hand-building techniques like slab, pinch, coil, and more.

Tools will be provided for the workshop on a returnable basis.

Nata Sankirtan (Pung Cholom and Kartal Cholom): Witness a drum dance that endeavors perfect synchronization of intricate body movements, rhythm patterns, and the harmonious play of the drum and Kartal (big cymbals). This majestic performance is not just an art form but also an invocation to Lord Krishna and Radha, adding depth and spirituality to the spectacle. 

Dhol Dholok Cholom: Immerse yourself in the joyful Spring Festival of colors in Manipur with this dance featuring percussion instruments like Dhol and Dholak. The artists showcase acrobatic movements, creating an exhilarating visual spectacle that celebrates the essence of the festival. 

About the Curator: Ms. Suman Sarawgi, our esteemed curator, is a highly skilled artist with extensive training in classical Manipuri Dance. She has performed globally, receiving accolades for her contributions to dance and her innovative approach to dance/movement therapy.

The evening begins with an interactive introduction where the artists reveal and elaborate on the Raga & Tala they're about to bring to life. This immersive experience sets the stage for a profound musical encounter.

Explore the Raga's nuances, starting with the introspective Alap and transitioning into the rhythmic Jod Jhala, all skillfully performed without Tabla accompaniment. 

The crescendo arrives with the Gat or Bandish, where the Tabla joins in, igniting a mesmerizing dialogue between melody and rhythm. Experience the tempo shifting from slow to super-fast, leaving you spellbound and immersed in the sheer brilliance of the performance.

Indradeep Ghosh - 'Prince of Violin': Renowned as the 'Prince of Violin,' Indradeep Ghosh is a trailblazer for the Maihar Gharana, known for his unique musical prowess and the ability to evoke a range of emotions through his performances. His innovative style integrates various musical techniques, creating a fusion of Western Classical and Oriental music. With a repertoire spanning across prestigious international festivals and collaborations with esteemed musicians, Indradeep continues to redefine Indian Classical Music.

Pandit Gourisankar - Tabla Maestro: Pandit Gourisankar, a leading tabla maestro, showcases his talent and creativity through classical performances and experimental East-West World Music collaborations. His artistry has graced stages alongside eminent artists both in Indian classical and world music spheres. As the founder of the "School of Indian Percussion & Music" in Austin, Texas, Gourisankar continues to inspire and nurture budding talents in the field.

About the Artists

Partha Bose: Embark on a musical journey that began in 1968 when a six-year-old boy from a family of industrialists in Kolkata, India, was initiated into Sitar under the guidance of GURU Pandit MONOJ SHANKAR of MAIHAR GHARANA. Intensive training and rigorous practice paved the way for a career spanning six decades. Partha Bose, a well-travelled maestro, has graced major music festivals across continents, sharing his expertise through lectures, demonstrations, and workshops. Recognitions such as the NIKHIL BANERJEE MEMORIAL AWARD, SANGEET RATNA & VADYA SHIROMANI titles reflect his commitment to excellence. For Partha Bose, music is a "language of the soul, reminding us of our shared humanity."

Pandit Abhijit Banerjee: Renowned Tabla artist Pandit Abhijit Banerjee is a stalwart in Indian classical music, acknowledged with numerous accolades and awards. Beyond his contributions to Indian music, he has explored diverse world music genres as a performer and composer. As a premier disciple of the late Pt. Gyan Prakash Ghosh, Abhijit has accompanied top-ranking stars of Hindustani classical music on the tabla. His extensive global performances and collaborations with international musicians showcase the breadth of his talent. Founder of the ensemble Tarang, Abhijit has also ventured into scoring music for various mediums, winning a National Award for Documentary Music. His legacy includes the establishment of the Dhwani Academy of Percussion in Los Angeles and Kolkata, attracting talented students from around the world.

About Silajit Majumder 

Silajit Majumder is a multifaceted artist known for his contributions to the Bengali and Hindi film industries. Renowned as a playback singer, music director, actor, and lyricist, Silajit has carved a niche with his exceptional talent. From his debut solo album "Bhoomika" in 1994 to a repertoire of albums and notable film appearances, Silajit continues to enthrall audiences with his versatile skills. 

His journey spans across various cinematic projects, including notable roles in films like "Asukh" (1999) by Rituparno Ghosh and "Krantikaal" (2005) by Sekhar Das. Additionally, Silajit's musical prowess shines through in his work as a music director for films like "Chupkatha" (2012) and his soulful renditions in movies such as "Kidnapper" (2013), "Jomer Raja Dilo Bor" (2015), and "Jawker Dhan" (2017).
